Calgary Event - 'Call of the Wetland' Field Trip

Registration is closed for this event

Come out to learn how to become a citizen scientist and hear from the Call of the Wetland project team members on how the data will inform decisions for the City of Calgary.

Within the City of Calgary, 90% of pre-settlement wetlands have been lost and continue to decline. The loss of these wetlands significantly impacts the water quality and quantity in the Calgary area through loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services they provide. Amphibians are an important indicator of wetland health, but little is known about which species persist in Calgary. A better understanding of the current health of wetlands and their inhabitants will enable sustained protection and improved well-being for all Calgary and area residents through natural water purification and management.

The Miistakis Institute, along with funders and partners including Enbridge, Parks Foundation Calgary, Alberta Conservation Association, The City of Calgary, the Calgary Zoo, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Calgary Foundation and Bow River Basin Council, have developed “Call of the Wetland”, a citizen-science program to monitor amphibians as an important indicator of wetland health. Citizen science is a powerful approach; by engaging citizens in the monitoring process we not only improve scientific literacy, but also the flow of information about wetlands, amphibians and the need for their protection. By engaging citizens with “Call of the Wetland” we are building a community of knowledgeable citizens to champion wetland protection and restoration.

The Call of the Wetland app contains amphibian identification tips, recordings and photos, and can be downloaded on the Apple app store or Google Play. For more information visit: http://callofthewetland.ca
