How Big Data, Visualization and Scenario Forecasting Has Been Informing Edmonton Planning

This presentation will explore how forecasting tools and big data can allow planners to look at the consequences of potential changes to municipal design on social, economic and environmental futures. It will also engage planners in a discussion on how the use of forecasting tools and big data is impacting the planning practice.

Mr. Thom Stubbs spends most of his time helping people make decisions. He has acted as a project leader, Deputy Minister, facilitator, mediator and research member providing analytical insight to challenging decisions.

Thom is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners, has served on the Boards of the International Association of Public Participation and on International Association for Impact Assessment. As a planner, he has advised municipal development plans, and regional growth plans, including the Capital Region Growth Plan. He has recently become more interested in how big data and scenario forecasting can inform decision-making.

Dr. Brad Stelfox established Forem Technologies and the ALCES Group in 1995 and is the architect and developer of the ALCES model. He is an adjunct professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, and the Department of Environmental Design, University of Calgary. Brad's research and teachings focus on the interface between human land uses and regional landscapes.
