Despite massive declines in established area population, school closures, and housing pressures; the reality that welcoming new growth into existing established neighbourhoods is wildly contentious and often considered at the expense of community ‘character’ and in opposition with stability. How to bring back the love is an exploration of the emotional connection of growth and change through local area planning in Calgary, Alberta. This session will explore the complexities of community planning and the significant role of human emotion in the process. Using a practice-based approach, the session will discuss a series of innovative codesign strategies as implemented in local area planning to address bringing emotions and people into the fold of our work. The session will explore who we need to be as practitioners to do this work and provide an overview of The Community Connection Handbook; a contemporary collection of practice-based tools, strategies, and insights that acts as a practitioner's guide for fostering emotional connections between communities and the redevelopment process. Be prepared to be guided through self reflection and a series of conversations designed to help facilitate meaningful connections within community. Ultimately, leave feeling as though the practice of planning can be an act of caring, one that helps to build stronger, more connected, and loving communities.
Dr. Teresa Goldstein RPP, MCIP is a recognized leader in urban planning and housing. Based in Calgary, Alberta, Teresa is hailed as an authority in community development, with a diverse background spanning government and private sectors. Teresa has led significant redevelopments throughout Alberta including the community of Currie, Calgary and the Village of Griesbach in Edmonton. For over 11 years, she held multiple roles at The City of Calgary - serving as both the Manager of Affordable Housing, the overseer of The City of Calgary's housing initiatives, as well as the Manager of Community Planning. She is an accomplished instructor and for eight years has taught at the University of Calgary- School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. She successfully defended her Doctorate centered on the emotional dimensions of local area planning in June 2023. Teresa's diverse experiences bear testament to her ability to drive growth, uplift lives, and achieve ambitious objectives.
