APPI Calgary Event - The National Energy Code
Energy codes have a profound influence on building form and function, affecting both design and building construction in myriad ways. These changes are holistic in nature, influencing aesthetics, technology adoption, siting, massing and fenestration patterns and details of buildings. These interrelated facets of building performance are not are not always recognized by – or aligned with – current planning and policy goals; yet are intimately related to the cost and long term energy consumption of buildings and their ultimate viability in the urban setting.
Using the adoption of the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2017 as a framework, we will explore the structure and performance objects of the new energy code, its impacts on contemporary planning practice as it pertains to costs, process, and coordination with other disciplines, and explore both limitations and its potential use as a tool to positively shape urban form.
Prior to joining The City of Calgary, Justin Pockar worked as a consultant, completing several projects certified to LEED Gold or better. As Coordinator of Plans Examination for Development Approvals and Building Safety at the City of Calgary, current responsibilities include administration of building and energy codes in the approvals processes and built environment. He has authored several works, notably playing a role in the development of the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB), and contributing volumes for both ASHRAE and BIM Canada publications. In addition, he occupies positions on the Canada Green Building Council Alberta Board of Directors, the Standing Committee for Energy Efficiency at the National Research Council, and SAIT’s Green Building Technology Centre Board.
