The Arc Card: Developing Our Smart Card System

Load, tap, and go. In many cities around the world contactless smart cards are an integral part of your day to day life, providing you access to regional transit systems (Presto Card (Toronto)) and/or retail businesses and services (Octopus Card (Hong Kong)). In 2021, a smart fare card called the Arc Card was rolled out to U-Pass folders, transit staff, and some adult-fare riders as a pilot program, expanding to include adult-fares in some member municipalities in 2022. Today, the Arc Card System is utilized by seven transit agencies across the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, with further planned expansions in 2023.  Join Sarah Feldman, Lindsey Radford, and Cameron Grayson as they share the evolution of Arc Card, including the history, the unique features of Arc, and how the system aims to improve the customer experience. 
 

Sarah Feldman RPP, MCIP

Director, Business Integration and Workforce Development for ETS

Sarah Feldman is the Director of Business Integration and Workforce Development for Edmonton Transit Service. In this role, she oversees ETS fare system and fare programs, customer care, business strategy and planning, and operating recruitment and training. Previously Sarah led ETS through the bus network redesign and design and implementation of on demand service, and developed Edmonton's Transit Strategy. An Urban Planner by trade, her work has spanned a variety of fields including land use and transportation planning, waste management, district energy and sustainability policy. Sarah is passionate about articulating strategic direction for public transit and modernizing the customer experience.

Lindsey Radford

Transit Supervisor

Lindsey Radford is the Transit Supervisor for the City of Fort Saskatchewan. She has worked in the transit industry for over 15 years with Strathcona County, Edmonton and now Fort Saskatchewan. In her current role, she oversees all areas of transit, ranging from planning and scheduling to customer service to operations. Major projects that Lindsey has been involved in, include a complete redesign of the Strathcona County bus network, the acquisition of double deck buses, the design and build of a new bus terminal and the design and implementation of new technologies.

Cameron Grayson

Director, Transit Innovation Programs

Cameron Grayson is Director, Transit Innovation Programs responsible for implementing Smart Fare -  an electronic, account based transit fare payment system that uses modern payment technologies to make it easier for transit customers to purchase and pay for their transit trips.  Previously Cameron led the Waste Services Curbside Cart Collection implementation - the first big step in the City’s 25-year plan to divert 90 percent of household waste from the landfill and the Edmonton annexation of lands south of its existing boundary to ensure that we have enough land to accommodate growth.  Cameron is most passionate about projects that benefit all Edmontonians and is committed to increasing the social and economic wellbeing of our citizens.
