One municipality's approach to responding to the upcoming legalization of cannabis.

With the federal government’s intent to legalize cannabis, expected in August 2018, municipalities are working to identify what that means for them and the various impacts legalization will have on local policies and bylaws. The City of Calgary has been working diligently conducting research and undertaking public and stakeholder engagement to help inform necessary amendments to existing bylaws and policies, including rules/regulations required for businesses operating within the municipality, rules/regulations related to public consumption, and enforcement of municipal, provincial and federal regulation of legalized recreational cannabis.

Matt Zabloski has worked with the City of Calgary for the past 8 years. During this time he has worked as a Planner with Planning and Development and as an Executive Advisor in Calgary Community Standards. In his current role as a Business Strategist with Community Standards he is the project lead responsible for coordinating The City’s response to the legalization of cannabis. He has also served as a member of the Technical Advisory Group for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ response to cannabis legalization.

This event qualifies for 1.0 structured learning unit.
