Understanding the Updated National Model of Ethical Standards and Code of Conduct for Canada’s Planning Profession

Effective January 1, 2027, updated national ethical standards will modernize and clarify the principles and professional expectations that guide planning practice in Canada.

This webinar is intended to help planning professionals and candidates understand the updated standards and prepare for their implementation.

Updates to the National Model of Ethical Standards and Code of Conduct include:

  • More clearly defined responsibility to the public
  • Specific expectations around engaging with Indigenous communities
  • Greater emphasis on professional judgment and independence
  • Clearer expectations around conflicts of interest and improper influence
  • Responsibility and transparency around technology like artificial intelligence

Please note that each Provincial and Territorial Institute or Association (PTIA) may adopt variances to the national model to align with local legislative, regulatory, or legal requirements.

Following a brief presentation by the panellists, participants will also have an opportunity to ask the Professional Standards Board (PSB) questions about the updated standards and what these changes mean for their exam preparation and/or professional practice.

Speakers:

Phae Eckhart, Executive Director, Professional Standards Board (PSB)

Patricia Maloney RPP, MCIP – PSB Standards Advisory Committee (Chair)

Samantha Mark RPP, MCIP – PSB Ethical Standards Sub-Committee (Chair)
