Webinar - What Can I Build Here? Emerging Digital Tools for Navigating Land Use Regulation

There's a rapid increase in the capabilities of different software options for planners, but it's largely overwhelming to your average planner. AI, 3D modeling, visualizations, Cloud permit software, etc. - lots of buzz words, but few opportunities to really understand what it all means. This session will be a refreshing look at a few simple software innovations that steer away from overwhelming AI complexity and get down to some practical new applications that can help planners. The session will highlight three different online planning applications with 10-15 minute demos each followed by a Q&A.

Who Regulates What: Simplifying regulations for productive community planning

Navigating the many layers of government can be a confusing process for communities, politicians and administration. One of the biggest challenges is identifying who regulates what in terms of government land use policies and procedures, but our innovative planning tool cuts through the confusion. Who Regulates What is an interactive map that easily identifies government jurisdictions for specific land-use questions, helping users find the information they need to move forward.

LandView is a web map of every parcel in a city, where clicking any lot instantly tells you what you can build on it. Behind each property it joins two things planners normally keep in separate silos: the zoning and parcel geometry from the city's open GIS, and the actual rules from the land use bylaw. So instead of a static zoning map, you get the answer, permitted uses, height, footprint, setbacks, subdivision potential, computed live against that specific lot's size, with a link straight to the governing bylaw clause. The interesting part is that none of it is hand-built for one city. Point it at another municipality's open data and bylaw and the same tool lights up there too, which turns a fragmented, city-by-city manual process into something that scales.
