APPI Edmonton Event - Garden Suites

Registration is closed for this event
Garden suites, also known as laneway homes, granny flats, or carriage houses, are becoming a hot topic in cities across Canada that are looking for creative ways to increase their supply of affordable housing while controlling outward growth. These backyards homes offer a number of unique features that make them appealing to a range of demographics; from ageing Boomers to first time home buyers. Edmonton, a prairie city that is experiencing tremendous growth, offers a unique lens into the world of garden suites.

Attendees will hear from Ashley Salvador, a planner, researcher, and community organizer on all things garden suites. She will be providing an overview of her research on garden suites, the first of its kind in Canada, and will delve into some of the most interesting findings around affordability, homeowners as developers, and the importance of zoning reform for unlocking the potential of homeowners as city-builders. Ashley will also speak to her role as President and Founder of YEGarden Suites, Alberta’s only non-profit garden suite advocacy and education-based organization, which is helping push the conversation around infill housing in Edmonton. She will discuss learnings from the space between community, municipality, and industry, as well as the importance of collaboration between these realms. Ashley Salvador is the President and Founder of YEGarden Suites and CEO of Municipaction Inc. Ashley has a BA Honours in Sustainability and Sociology from Dalhousie University, and is in her final semester at the University of Waterloo for her MA Planning degree. Ashley’s experience includes business development, social marketing, and social, cultural, and urban planning.
