Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

Olds College is offering introductory courses in QGIS and ArcGIS Pro for professionals using the software in the workplace and anyone with an interest in GIS technology. These two-day courses are each designed to provide comprehensive basic training of two different types of available software, with industry-specific examples and exercises to ensure you meet your applicable training needs. Custom group training is also available.

Who should attend?
Anyone that works for or has an interest in: agriculture, environment, geoscience, agrology, municipal planning, surveying, turf and golf course management.

Introduction to ArcGIS Pro (2 Days)

Prerequisites: This course assumes that you are already familiar with GIS concepts and terminology. 
Delivery Method: In-Person

Extend your foundational GIS knowledge, get comfortable with the ArcGIS Pro application and explore some of the most common GIS workflows. This course introduces techniques and general best practices to map, manage, analyze and share data and other GIS resources. Hands-on exercises will give you the experience needed to efficiently work with ArcGIS Pro.

After completing this two-day course, you will be able to:

  • Organize, create, and edit geographic data
  • Manage, symbolize, and label map layers
  • Analyze GIS data and solve spatial problems
  • Share maps and analyze results

Introduction to QGIS (2 Days)

QGIS is a new, FREE open source software, which provides more access to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology than ever before. The availability of this open source GIS and its powerful tools allows you to quickly implement a GIS and start experiencing the benefits of the technology. This two-day course will provide you with hands-on, specifically tailored to your industry. The afternoon of Day Two will be spent practices on industry-specific data sets. You are welcome to provide your own data sets for the exercises.

Day 1:

  • Acquiring data for a GIS
  • Digitizing GIS data
  • Loading spatial data

Day 2:  

  • Styling and manipulating datasets
  • Analyzing data
  • Making and publishing maps using industry-specific data sets
