APPI Calgary Event - Calgary's Laneway Housing

Registration is closed for this event

Laneway houses are becoming a hot topic in Calgary as the city projects a rise in population - over 2 million residents by the year 2050. Studio North offers a creative way to increase Calgary's housing supply while controlling sprawl: this compact building typology offers a delicate solution for enhancing walkable and transit-accessible neighbourhoods. The company describes laneway houses as "fully independent, small-scale dwellings that face on to an alley, typically found in the backyard of existing homes. Think of them as ‘urban cabins’ - modest, comfy dwellings in inner city neighbourhoods".These homes cater to a variety of demographics from the elderly to young adults and young families while offering independent living.
Matthew Kennedy, a founding principle of Studio North will give an overview of his work and how laneway houses can increase density to accommodate a diverse variety of families, life styles, incomes and uses. Matt will touch upon the process of land acquisition and rezoning, as well as his experience of facilitating community engagement in neighbourhoods that are unfamiliar to laneway houses. Finally, he will touch upon the importance of how these homes generate incremental change in density at the level that can be tackled by homeowners."

Matthew's passion for design connects landscape, community, and the process of making. His ambitious nature as a designer, artist, and maker has driven him to realize projects of a variety of scales across Canada. He started apprenticing as a finishing carpenter while in high school and has worked with various building trades in the past. Matthew's interests in craft and compact living was formed while studying architecture at Dalhousie University. In 2011, he was awarded the Rossetti Travel Fellowship to travel to Japan and research compact housing typologies. Matthew's architectural thesis focused on developing a strategy for laneway housing in Calgary's inner city communities. Upon receiving his Master of Architecture, he was awarded the Thesis prize for an outstanding design thesis.
