APPI Calgary Event - Politics in Planning – Lessons and Insights from the Local Media Perspective

Registration is closed for this event

As traditional media is struggling to stay relevant in a day of immediate news availability through social media, and local news sources are being swallowed up by national companies, there is growing concern about the loss of quality, local journalism. This, however, has led to new and innovative opportunities for the provision of local news.

Join us for a panel discussion with Richard White, founder of the Everyday Tourist Blog, who often writes about his own urban experiences in Calgary and the surrounding region, and Darren Krause, founder of Livewire Calgary, a crowd-funded local news source that focuses on producing balanced stories that Calgarians want to hear about.

Richard White
As a former scientist, artist, contemporary art curator and downtown advocate, Richard White sees urban spaces and places from a unique perspective. He is a self-taught urban critic who loves to flaneur urban places to see and experience the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. White will examine why Calgary planners, politicians and developers MUST evolve from their 20th century downtown centric thinking, to a multi-centric thinking to allow the Calgary region to thrive in the 21st century.

Darren Krause
After spending 10 years as the Managing Editor at the Metro Calgary, covering a wide range of issues, including exceptional city hall coverage, Darren Krause is now on the leading edge of Calgary's independent journalism movement. He launched LiveWire Calgary in June 2018, with a focus on delivering for readers neighbourhood level news on topics that really matter to them. Over the years, he's seen several different planning initiatives and how they dovetail with the political agenda of the day.  Politics and planning don't always mix and it could be the biggest hurdle to moving the city forward.

This event qualifies for 1.0 structured learning unit.
