Arrowheads and Urban Planning?  In Alberta, the Historical Resources Act governs the province’s
archaeological, palaeontological, cultural, resources and historic structures. Structures are better
understood given their visibility; whereas, other types of historic resources are at risk of destruction
because they are typically ‘invisible’. Consideration of historic resources is required when planning any
type of development project in Alberta. Understanding the regulatory framework around historic
resources and the potential outcomes are important to be able to make recommendations on future
land use and to identify opportunities for incorporation of resources into community planning. Calgary is
a hot spot for pre-contact archaeological sites within Alberta and the average citizen has no idea. With
more attention on Indigenous culture, archaeological sites are becoming a discussion point for many
projects.  The luncheon presentation will present an overview of provincial legislation, potential
scenarios that may be encountered, and then touch on some interesting finds within the City of Calgary
and the opportunities those finds present for citizens.

Laureen Bryant has a Master’s in Archaeology and spent over 15 years working for private consultancies
before joining the City. During her consulting years, she led archaeology programs (excavation, survey,
and monitoring) throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwestern States.  Being the only
Archaeologist on staff at the City, working in the Cultural Landscape portfolio, Laureen has observed a
variety of situations where resources have been conserved appropriately and others where they have
been inadvertently impacted. She has identified that a general lack of awareness, combined with
confidentiality issues has contributed to many sites being lost forever.

This event qualifies for 1.0 structured learning unit.
