Government of Alberta Streamlining Professional Legislation ProjectIn 2020, the provincial Ministry of Labour and Immigration initiated a Streamlining Professional Legislation project, with a lens of reducing red tape and legislation, and to re-affirm Alberta’s commitment to professional regulation in the public interest and public safety. This project included a comprehensive review of the Professional and Occupational Associations Registration Act (POARA), the Act under which APPI and 12 other professional regulatory organizations (PROs) derive regulatory authority. In May of 2021, APPI was invited to respond to questions aimed at identifying opportunities to streamline professional legislation to promote consistency and create efficiencies. APPI partnered with four other PROs (Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, Alberta Association of Landscape Architects, Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals, Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta), to produce a coordinated joint submission that focused on shared interests and referenced research and best practices from other jurisdictions, which has been submitted to Labour and Immigration. Changes to professional legislation in Alberta are anticipated in the fall of 2021 and those changes could potentially impact APPI, POARA, and regulated professional planners in Alberta. APPI will continue to monitor and liaise with Government of Alberta on the outcome of this legislation review and update the membership accordingly. In the meantime, if you require further information on this matter, please contact APPI's Executive Director, MaryJane Alanko at [email protected]. 2021 APPI Conference EVOLUTION Register by September 15!!Conference and Registration Information click here.
