2019 APPI Regional Compensation and Benefits Survey – Professional Planners Move Closer to Gender Pay Equity

The national, provincial and territorial planning institutes and associations released the results of the first comprehensive nation-wide compensation and benefits survey of Canadian professional planners on October 23, 2019.  Thank you to all professional planners who participated in the survey.

The survey had 1,850 respondents nationally, of which 229 were members of APPI, representing 12% of the survey participants. APPI’s regional report is now available:

The self-reported data included in the report provides information about pay levels and other forms of compensation, along with some standardized demographic information. This survey is not statistically representative of the complete APPI professional planning membership or the total population of individuals in these positions or locales.

In 2015, APPI’s first compensation survey revealed a mean annual wage gap between male and female planners of $13,690, and further analysis revealed that female planners were not, on average, paid less because they had less experience. Even with the same years of experience, a disparity in compensation was evident. As an organization that values ethical practice, integrity and fair process, APPI committed to work diligently to share messages about the wage gap and educate members on how they could become part of the solution. The 2017 survey by APPI indicated that some progress toward reducing the gender gap was occurring.

The 2019 APPI Compensation and Benefits Report reflects that both the median and mean salary gender gaps have decreased further since 2017 (see table below), however, it is important to review the report in its entirety. In particular, the data reflects that while both the median and mean salary gender gaps have decreased, these decreases are not directly correlated to increases in women’s salaries, but rather to a decrease in men’s average salaries.
