Reminder to Register! APPI Calgary Event - 'Coming to a Yard Near Yours: Honeybees in Urban Municipalities'

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Registration: 11:30 AM Presentation and Meal: 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Tivoli Hall, Danish Canadian Club, 727 11 Avenue, SW, Calgary

Urban honeybee farming is becoming increasingly popular in and around major urban municipalities in Canada. Until recently, the push to plan for bees in urban environments has been less apparent but with honeybees being introduced into residential contexts, guidelines and regulations are becoming a necessity.

Thomas Schweizer, President of the Calgary and District Beekeepers Association (CDBA), has been involved on a voluntary basis to assist the City of Calgary with honeybee-related inquiries.

David Misfeldt is Boulevard Maintenance Technician with the City of Calgary. His team is responsible for maintaining around 1400 ha of land for the city. David will be share some information about a project the City undertook on Canyon Meadows Drive, SE where they planted native salt tolerant pollinator friendly plants, and stone boulder beds and a bee hotel. The University is currently in year 2 of a 5 year study of the site and an endangered bee was recently found at the site.
