APPI Calgary Event - 'Development next to Freight Rail Corridors Policy - Risk-Based Land Use Planning'Wednesday, January 30, 2019 Like many Canadian cities, Calgary was shaped by the railways in its early days. Today, Calgary is a major transportation and logistics hub and is connected via six corridors to the national rail network through the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) and Canadian National Railway (CN).
With increasing volumes and types of goods being transported via freight railways, there is an increased awareness across the country for the potential risk of accidents and the physical impacts of train derailments on development adjacent to the rail corridors. To address this risk and to enable and facilitate the growth pressures on lands adjacent to freight rail corridors, the City of Calgary took an evidence based approach in developing the “Development Next to Freight Rail Corridors Policy” that is unique to the Calgary context. Our presentation will highlight our approach to this new innovative policy not yet undertaken by a Canadian municipality, the key components of the policy, and its benefit to the City of Calgary, land owners, general public and rail companies. Presented by Abdul Jaffari, Planner – Calgary Growth Strategies, and Cliff De Jong, Coordinator, Safety Response Unit, both with the City of Calgary. This event qualifies for 1.0 structured learning unit. Prices (lunch included): APPI Members $35.00, Non-members
