APPI Council Candour

Over the weekend of September 29-30 Council attended a number of meetings and events in Edmonton. It was a great opportunity for Council to connect with APPI members, partners, and future planners while learning more about current planning trends and activities in the Edmonton region:

  • Two members of Council, Glinis Buffalo and Kate van Fraassen, participated in a Mind for Planning Session at the City of Edmonton to share personal and professional experiences and discuss opportunities for increasing awareness and understanding of Indigenous Planning in Alberta. Thank you to everyone who attended the session. As a first step in implementing the Indigenous Initiative of APPI's Strategic Plan, a date was set for Indigenous Awareness Training for Council in early 2018. Further information about this initiative will be unveiled as it develops - please stay tuned!
  • Members of Council and the Community Planning Association of Alberta met with students at the University of Alberta to chat about the planning profession and opportunities for students to get involved with both organizations. The future of professional planning in Alberta is looking bright!
  • Council hosted an APPI Social with members from Edmonton and area in Old Strathcona, including an excellent walking tour to visit redevelopment sites along Whyte Avenue where attendees were able to get the inside scoop from representatives of the City of Edmonton and Stantec who have worked on the projects.
  • Council received an update on the 2018 conference theme and co-chairs. Mark your calendars for September 30 - October 2, 2018!
  • APPI has shared information from our 2017 salary survey with other provincial planning organizations to support the potential of other institutes completing a similar survey to improve information on planning salaries across the country.
  • Council provided updates on ongoing work to implement the Strategic Plan and received reporting on the institute's financials. Our strategic projects are on track and progressing, and our books are in solid shape going forward!
  • APPI's Legislative Review Committee is working with the province to update the Alberta Professional Planner Regulation. There will be the opportunity for both member and stakeholder consultation. If you have any questions please email [email protected]
  • Council reviewed an early draft of APPI's Risk Management Plan, the intent of which is to ensure the institute is prepared and well positioned to handle any foreseeable future risks.
  • Lastly, Council accepted the resignation of Past President Misty Sklar from APPI Council. A very big thank you to Misty for her incredible contributions to the institute since first being elected to Council in 2013. While she will be missed, Council wishes Misty all the best with her current and future endeavours.
If you have any questions or suggestions for APPI Council, please get in touch with us by sending an email to [email protected].
