APPI Council Candour

The new Council met virtually for the first time in early June. APPI Council is pleased to welcome Jeff Chase as the new APPI Council President, Mac Hickley as Past President, and two new Councillors, Khalid Mohammed and Scott Low. The majority of the meeting was dedicated to Council orientation and an overview of APPI.

The highlights from the meeting are as follows:

•    The Officers for the 2021/22 Council term were elected, as follows:
•    Jeff Chase – President
•    Peter Ohm – Treasurer
•    Heather Chisholm – Secretary

•    APPI has three standing committees – the Registration Committee, Practice Review Committee, and the Discipline Committee. Standing Committee appointments were ratified during the meeting.

•    APPI Council has three strategic committees – Executive Director Review Committee, Governance Committee, and Finance Committee. Strategic Committee appointments were ratified during the meeting.

•    Council discussed APPI event hosting and options for the 2022 Conference. The 2021 APPI Conference will be held online. Given the many unknowns, venues for an in-person conference will be explored but no contractual obligations will be made at this time. Given how geographically-dispersed the membership is, APPI plans to continue to deliver some programs and services virtually.

•    The Professional and Occupational Associations Registration Act (POARA), which is an umbrella legislation that grants title protection and regulation-making authority to 13 self-governing professional regulatory organizations, is under review by Alberta Labour and Immigration. Council was provided an update on the review. An update will be provided to the membership within the next few weeks.

•    Council committed to undertaking a review of the Risk Management Plan, which was adopted in 2018, and updating the plan as required for 2021/22.
