The world wastes more energy than it uses every year, with billions of gigajoules of wasted heat energy escaping from millions of buildings in thousands of cities worldwide. Although energy-efficiency programs exist worldwide (and are estimated at $360B USD), most only measure energy consumption, not waste energy. This is because waste-energy is invisible to the human eye, and it's difficult to measure, monitor, or manage something that we can’t see. Yet, waste-energy is responsible for an estimated 50% of urban energy demand but is missing from urban energy efficiency equations.

In order to mitigate these challenges, this seminar will describe the MIT award winning HEAT (Heat Energy Assessment Technologies) program whose goal is to show ¬¬¬where millions of homes are losing energy, how much it costs and what to do about it, as simply as clicking on your home in Google Maps. We will also discuss how the use of Geographic Object Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) lead to a university start-up (MyHEAT Inc) that has created the largest high-resolution thermal infrared acquisition campaign in Canada and one of the largest in the world; representing proprietary high-resolution thermal infrared heat-loss images for 50+ cities in Canada and the USA, covering 12,000+ sq.km and a population of about 10 million people - with more projects under development.

Presented by:

Dr Hay is a full professor in GIScience in the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary, Alberta, and Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer at MyHEAT Inc - his UC Startup founded in 2014. He is the author of more than 250 scholarly works and has given keynotes at numerous international venues including NASA (GSFC), TEDx and a Special Session of the United Nations Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment. His research program 'The Remote Sensing of Urban Energy Efficiency' is funded by NSERC (2019-2023.)
