Full disclosure - unlike the name suggests, this presentation is not really a primer to Northern Planning, but more on the lines of "first impressions of northern planning on people who knew very little about it, but now somehow practice it (mostly by accident)". The presentation does touch upon some obvious, and some not-so-obvious, aspects to planning in the north.

The presentation is divided into two parts, first dealing with 'rural planning in the north' and the second one on 'northern urban planning'. The presentation concludes with some common themes between both and a few things that planning school probably doesn't prepare you for.

Presenter
Nikita currently works as the North Peace Land Use Planner at the Peace River Regional District, BC. She holds a Master of Planning degree from the University of Calgary and a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree from India. Her work as an architect primarily focused on residential and institutional projects in urban settings. Although she trained as an architect, Nikita was more passionate about working on a larger scale. She was intrigued by the ability of planners to shape environments, evoke emotions in people and leave a lasting mark on spaces. So, she decided to come to Canada and pursue her interest in planning. Now, residing in the city of Fort St. John and working for the public sector, she is exposed to a plethora of experiences. It has been a steep learning curve – communicating with residents, coordinating with provincial agencies, working on long-range development documents, and getting a holistic understanding of how it all works together, from legal bylaws to financial budgets! Nikita is excited to see what more is in store for her planning career.

Presenter
Sidharth is an urban planner with four years of experience in private consulting and municipal planning. Having worked with the private sector in India for three years, he decided to move halfway across the globe to pursue a Master in Planning from the University of Calgary. Currently a Planner 2 with the Planning and Sustainability Services at the City of Whitehorse,  he is easing into his new role as a municipal employee (and adapting to the northern landscape!).  Sidharth has worked in few unique geographies, including tropical islands, sandy deserts, and now Northern Canada. He is interested by how landscape influences human behaviour and the role it plays in shaping different cultures. He is also passionate about 'planning for happiness' and tries to apply these principles to his work as much as he can (sometimes successfully). His ultimate goal is to work for the UN.
